First Impressions of the Chevrolet S10 for 1999
In 1999 Chevrolet released the S10 LS to the truck-buying market. The S10 came in four configurations: Xtreme, LS, ZR2, and Base. The LS configuration is powered by the 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine, which makes 20 highway miles and 16 city. The S10 competes in the Extended Cab Pickup market segment, in direct competition with Honda.
Chevrolet S10 Engine Specs
The restyled S10 LS is equipped with a General Motors 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine that utilizes a total of 8 valves. The Vortec engine is paired with a General Motors 4-speed transmission. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Chevrolet.
Steering control is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The S10 has power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The truck uses coil front springs and leaf in the rear.
The fuel system for the 1999 S10 is a SFI design, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel flow is regulated by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The storage capacity of the fuel tank is 25.00 gallons.
Vehicle Statistics
The S10 is 189.80 inches long, 77.50 inches wide, and 75.20 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 111.20 inches. It is able to seat 2 comfortably.
The standard warranty period for the S10 is 36 months, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The warranty also includes a warranty on the drivetrain for 36 months or 36,000 miles respectively. This is standard in the extended cab pickup market. Extended warranties are also available through the dealer.
The listed retail price in 1999 (MSRP) was $22,125, with an invoice cost of $20,023. This price is above average of the industry average price for a two-door Extended Cab Pickup.
Fuel Efficiency
The S10 LS received a miles-per-gallon rating of sixteen in-city driving and twenty when it came to long-distance. Being a gas-powered non-green truck, this was exceptional.
In 1998 and 1999 the S10 LS was availble in the exterior colors of Dark Copper Metallic, Dark Forest Green Metallic, Ivory White, Light Carmine Red Metallic, Light Autumnwood Metallic, Light Autumwood Metallic, Medium Bronzemist Metallic, Medium Cadet Blue Metallic, Medium Charcoal Gray Metallic, Silvermist Metallic, and Teal Blue Metallic. Additional options were made available by the factory.
We Think...
The 1998 model began the promise of the Chevrolet S10. The 1999 expanded on this success and has proven to be a strong seller in most markets. Even with strong competition from other manufacturers Chevrolet hopes that the S10 LS will continue to be a profitable vehicle.
