Not Your Father’s S10 – The 1998 Chevrolet S10 SS
Several things can be said about the Chevrolet S10 series: including the polarizing reactions most buyers have towards their truck. The six-cylinder engine is at the heart of the strong emotions, it is powerful for its class and delivers a large amount of torque.
Chevrolet S10 Engine Specs
Standard equipment in the S10 for 1997 and 1998 includes the 4.3 liter engine by General Motors, weighing in at 6 cylinders and twelve valves. A 4-speed Automatic Transmission puts the power of the Vortec engine to the pavement. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Standard Cab Pickup arena.
The S10 uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The truck uses coil and leaf springs front and rear respectively.
The 1998 S10's exceptional fuel system runs on gas. The fuel is regulated electronically, with a fuel-injected multi-port fuel injection style of design. The fuel capacity of the truck is 25.00 gallons.
Vehicle Statistics
The S10 is 189.80 inches long, 77.50 inches wide, and 76.00 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 111.20 inches. It is able to seat 2 comfortably.
The standard warranty period for the S10 is 60* months, or 50,000* miles, whichever comes first. This is standard in the standard cab pickup market.
The listed retail price in 1998 (MSRP) was $21,740, with a dealer invoice cost of $19,675. This price is on target the industry average price for a two-door Standard Cab Pickup.
MPG Ratings
The S10 SS received a miles-per-gallon rating of sixteen in-city driving and twenty when it came to highway driving. Being a gas-powered non-hybrid truck, this was exceptional.
In 1997 and 1998 the S10 SS was availble in the exterior colors of Cherry Ice Metallic, Dark Copper Metallic, Dark Forest Green Metallic, Dark Purple Metallic, Ivory White, Light Autumnwood Metallic, Light Carmine Red Metallic, Medium Cadet Blue Metallic, Silvermist Metallic, and Teal Blue Metallic. Additional options were available as special orders from the factory.
We Think...
The 1998 model year was telling year for the Chevrolet S10. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the SS version) meant that buyers could find the version that best suited their needs.
